All the reports suggest, that the place was number (1). When Burhans troops recaptured the place, the Rapid Support Forces fled to the West taking the Egyptian prisoners with them. Where did they flee to? Into the desert? There is a caravan route through the desert to el-Fasher in South Dar Fur, one of the safe places of the Rapid Support Forces. But this is a horrible route. Many armies in history got lost on this route.
If the action was taking place in number (2), fleeing westward would make sense, because it is close to Khartoum, just up-stream. Furthermore the fleeing RSF would reach Khartoum from the side, that is controlled by them. But then as-Sisi would have to explain a lot, because from number (2) the way is open to Ethiopia. Why are Egyptian troops at this place?
Number (1) has an official airport and number (2) is reached by tourists from Khartoum by train. This does not exclude, that there is a military air-field. Number (2) is on the route from Khartoum to Port Sudan. Number (1) is far off to the North.
This is a point, that is troubling me for some days now.
