We haven't touched this thread for a long time, but I think, it is the right place to answer Khnum's post.
I first came across the Biblical geography by reading Kamal Salibi's books. He, a Lebanese Christian professor for history, came up with a strange theory. He wrote, the location of the "promised land" is wrong. His theory is based on Semitic place-names. He thought, the description of the "promised land" doesn't fit with modern "Israel". He found a full cluster of Semitic names in the Saudi province Asir, that would fit. This province is at the border to the Houthi controlled part of Yemen. But reading his books I learnt one thing: Semitic place names are not clear at all! "Medina" just means "town". "Mizraim" just means "fortress at the border" and so on. These places could be anywhere. There should be many clusters of names that could fit. Although I was not convinced of his identification with the province of Asir, I was convinced, that the modern identification was also wrong or at least most unlikely.
So I came across the archaeological excavation of Senjirli, a town in Southern Turkey close to the Syrian border. This town was excavated during the inter-war-period by the Germans Koldewey and von Luschan, who had got an excavation permit easily from the Turkish government. First they found in the inscriptions the Hittite name of this little state: Samal, then they found the Aramaic name: Jahudi. Juda! Then they found a full king-list: .... Saul... Azarja...! And then this little statelet was conquered by the Assyrians.
After WW II the excavation permit was given to the University of Chicago and no one was  using the Aramaic names anymore, only the Hittite names.
In 2001 Finkelstein and Silbermann, who had excavation permits from the Zionist regime, published their book "The Bible Unearthed". There they openly admit, that they had looked in vain in the modern state of "Israel" for traces of the ancient kingdoms. They come up with helpless explanations.
For me now it is clear, where the real kingdom of Juda was. And the exiles in Babylon put together different traditions and localized it wrongly but intentionally, where it is today. They not only used the traditions from this small kingdom of Juda, they also added traditions of the Babylonians about the Flood, of the Assyrians about Salomon (Salman-Assur) and from tribes coming down from the ancient state of Urartu (Ararat).
And then they asked the Persian king for permission to "return" to their "old country". There they built the "second temple".
I am only talking about the geography here, not about the chronology, that is very likely wrong also.

Thank you for taking the time to create this response Im currently following the history of the Gods its all the same themes recycled easy to track through Sumeria,Babylon and Assyria for example Enlil becomes Elil,then of course the Romans and Greeks change all the names but you can still identify them through powers and responsibilities,Enki the serpent in the Sumerian version of the garden of Eden and Enlil's opponent was actually the good guy in the Garden of Eden,back then serpent simply meant wisdom and he gave man the wisdom he wasn't a slave and animal,in other traditions the eating of meat was the forbidden fruit whatever the discrepencies there seems to be a core group of Gods I dont know enough to put a treatise up but there is nothing new under the Sun our problems now are due to the fact Baal,Ishtar and Marduk are back in the equation...by stealth

This "changing of names" is called interpretatio Graeca in Ancient Times. It's a well known phaenomenon. Jan Assman has written about it.

Of course not. But there are a lot of possible interpretations of biblical texts. On the literal surface they can be used in a pro-Zionist way. That's why I like the interpretation given by the Baptist (?) pastor. Your interpretation goes even deeper. There are many texts from Ancient Times, that are suspected to have such an "internal" (esoteric) meaning: Plato's dialogues, the Quran ("batin", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batiniyya, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batin_(Islam), the most famous are the Ismailyya or the Sufi). But there are also the Qabbalists, who try to find this "inner" meaning in the Tora.

You can add Neidan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neidan) a Taoist movement. "nei" 内 means "internal". You can see this from the character 内, a person 人 inside of something. This is connected to Traditional Chinese Medizin.
