In a breaking report CNN has cited Pentagon officials who say the missing Russian aircraft with 14 service members on board, now subject of a Russian search-and-rescue operation, was accidentally shot down by Syrian missile defense.
Pentagon sources say further that Israel was responsible for the nighttime attack, which reportedly involved strikes by air and possibly by sea from the Mediterranean. Israel has yet to issue comment.
But Russia says its radar picked up a French warship firing in the area just before the Russian patrol aircraft went down.

Who is Russia officially going to blame? Israel? France? Or will they say that it was an accident? The world's fate now lies on what Russia says about this incident. They know exactly what happened to their plane.

The launch was detected around the same time as air traffic controllers at the Khmeimim Air Base “lost contact” with a military Il-20 aircraft during an attack of Israeli F-16 fighters on Latakia.

Russia can't afford to back off any further. This was a clear provocation on the heels of the Russia / Turkey Idlib agreement.
Putins done an absolutely grand job of avoiding war up to this point, both in Syria and Ukraine, but surely enough is enough?
Jeez, I go off to watch two episodes of Mr Mercedes and all hell breaks loose.

What is worth noting is that this is the first time that two nuclear armed powers directly clashed. With Israel shooting down the Russian plane and Russian S400s trying to intercept. Just think about that for a sec...
