This is the same Boris who for his entire political life before Brexit was known for the most part as being a left leaning liberal, up until the Brexit vote where he said that he was torn between deciding to stay in the EU or back the Brexit, and spent weeks mulling over it. (A principled person would have known their stance immediately you would have thought)
In the end he chose to campaign behind Brexit, but many think this was because he didn't believe Brexit had the slightest chance of winning, so after the referendum in 2016 it would have put him in a prime spot to take over as Prime Minister from Cameron as a way to placate Brexiteers who lost the vote.
It's very similar to the stitch up in the US with Trump. Boris, like Trump, has spent his working life pursuing his own interests at the detriment of his fellow countrymen, quite happy to lie at any opportunity possible and give the false impression that he is suddenly an anti-establishment figure when it couldn't be further from the truth.
